Centrals Athletics
14 December 2012

Special congratulations to all of the children who participated in the Centrals Athletics Championships. This event was held at the Ashburton Domain last Wednesday. The weather was stunning and heaps of fun was had by everyone involved. As we have come to expect, the behaviour and sportsmanship displayed by children representing Paparoa Street School was simply outstanding.
The standard of competition was extremely high, but all of our athletes competed with distinction. There were a number of top ten finishes and some personal best performances achieved. A special congratulations goes to Sophie Williamson, who was placed 1st in the 9 year old girls 1000 metres long distance event, and 2nd in the 80 metres sprints. Congratulations also to Mine Nel who achieved a 2nd placing in the 10 year old girls 50 metres sprints. Well done, team:)

Centrals Rugby Tournament
20 September 2012

On Thursday 30 August our Paparoa Street School ‘A’ Rugby team and many other schools competed in the Canterbury Centrals Rugby Tournament at Hagley Park. We were glad to be playing and were hoping the weather wouldn’t call it off!

In our pool games we played Cotswold, Rowley, Oxford, Sumner and Freeville schools. As we were undefeated in all of these games we had to play against Fendalton School in the semi-final. We won this game 21-0. We had expected a harder match.

The final was against Rolleston School and they were our toughest challenge in the whole tournament. It was great to meet them, as we knew we were going to have to play them again the following day in the final of the Weekly A-grade Rugby Competition.

Throughout the final our team worked well together and no-one let anyone down on the field. All the practice really paid off as our combinations and set moves all worked as well as could be.

Rolleston didn’t give up as the final went into extra time. We knew we had to win so we pulled our socks up, showed some ticker and got out there and did the business. Luckily, it was Michael Philips from our school who bolted over the line to score the match-winning try. We were Canterbury Champions!!

On behalf of the team I would like to thank Mr Keats for coaching us over the season. I’d also like to thank Mr Fenemor and Mr Cooper for setting up and running the tournament. Of course, I want to thank all the boys, who worked really hard throughout our tough season.

By the way, we also won the Friday re-match against Rolleston School and took out the Canterbury Weekly A-grade title. That match wasn’t so tight because we had more time to play. Unbelievably, the final score was 56-14. I think we were more confident after beating them the day before and we really wanted to win in style. We also knew we had all of Paparoa Street School behind us. Two Canterbury rugby titles in one season and that made history for our school!

Great season all round.

Action Trophy Tournament
14 December 2012

This is our A Cricket Team at Hagley Park on the 7th December where they competed in the Action Trophy Tournament. They played St Albans, Waimairi and St Josephs in pool play and won all three. In the final they played Cotswold and lost 43/50 in a very close game.
Mr Tizzard was their coach and the team members were Emma Roberts, Olivia Paterson Jack Lindo, Reagan Byrne, Sam Clark, Ben Cameron, Hugo Reid, Billie Laietaua, Grace Walding, William Ferguson, Tiaki Oglivie and Harry Medlicott.
A big thank you to Mr Tizzard for giving up his time and coaching the team.

Welcome to our Paparoa Street School sports blog!
27 August 2012

As most of you already know sport is a significant undertaking at our school. In the senior school there are currently 125 children who have been involved in a weekly winter sports programme that has spanned the last fifteen weeks. This gives the children the opportunity to compete against children from many other schools across the greater Christchurch area.

We also have a number of teams involved in inter-school basketball competitions. The skill development and game sense they have developed has been most impressive.

Our Senior ‘A’ Rippa Rugby team has recently won a tournament that rewards them with the opportunity of representing Canterbury at a national Rippa Rugby tournament. This will be held in Wellington on 15-17 September.

We wish William Ferguson and Sam Medlicott all the best when they represent our school, and the Canterbury region, in an inter-regional competition to be held in Wellington on 27 September.

The children at our school are also involved in a wide range of sports that operate at a syndicate level. The junior school have just recently finished a block of Gymnastics and are about to have tennis and cricket coaching.

The middle and senior school children will soon be involved in developing skills as part of an intensive athletics programme.

It is our intention to use this blog to post results and keep everyone up to date with what is happening in the area of sport. We also hope to include photos of special events.
