Rippa Team

Our Rippa rugby team took part in the national competition in Wellington this week which involved 20 teams representing 20 provinces. It was a highly competitive tournament with all the teams having to win tournaments in their home province first. Our team came second, which was a phenomenal effort. In their pool play they won against Taranaki, Wanganui and South Canterbury and lost to Counties Manukau by one try. In the quarter finals we played Thames Valley in what was a very fast game and try for try throughout, with Isaac scoring the winning try in the last seconds of the game to put us through to the semis. Once again the game against Manawatu was very even and at fulltime it was a draw. We then had to go into extra time with Manawatu taking the tap to begin. We put pressure on them with our line speed and they dropped the ball, we then scooped it up and with good team work set Sophie up to take it down the sideline to score the winning try to put us in the finals! In the final we were up against Counties Manukau who were the favourites for the tournament. They had great line speed and were too good for us on the day, taking the title out. We played hard, enjoyed the moment and had fun. Congratulations to Isabella Galvan for winning the Small Blacks award of best and fairest girl of the tournament.

Outside playing time the team met the All Blacks in a fun skills session. Our team was assigned Wyatt Crockett and when the children moved around to each skill they met another All Black. A lot of fun was had by everyone. We would just like to thank the Challenge Service Station group for sponsoring our travelling tops and backpacks - it was very much appreciated. We can’t forget our parents who gave us amazing support , Hugh Galvan for helping coach this team, and Brendon Patchett, whose passion and vision for the team took us through to the final. Thank you so much.
